There are several variants of Shogi, Japanese chess, that are played on boards of different sizes.

Minishogi was invented (or rediscovered?) around 1970 by Shigenobu Kusumoto of Osaka.
The rules are mostly as in usual Shogi, but the game is played with only six pieces per player on a board of size 5 by 5. The differences with Shogi are only in the size of the board, the opening setup, and the fact that pieces promote only on the last row of the board (at their opponents side).

Kyoto Shogi is a variant of Shogi (Japanese Chess) invented by Tamiya Katsuya in 1976. It is played on a small 5-by-5 board. Like Shogi, pieces change between two different types - a promoted form and an unpromoted form. But unlike Shogi, however, this is not caused by reaching a section of the board. Instead, every piece except the King automatically promotes and demotes with every single move.

Short rules for Minishogi and Kyoto shogi are included in set.
